Bacterial Photosynthesis

In photosynthesis, solar radiation is absorbed by a light-harvesting apparatus and the excitation energy is then transferred efficiently to a reaction center that acts as a transducer, where the energy is used to create a charge-separated state the drives all subsequent metabolic reactions.

In our group we study the light-harvesting machinery of purple bacteria and of green-sulphur bacteria, to elucidate the character of the electronic states which lies at the heart of the fast and efficient energy transfer processes.
